These two houses in Burnham-on-Sea are decorated to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1897 she became the longest reigning monarch in British history (that record has now been broken by HM Queen Elizabeth II).
Streets and houses were decked with bunting, flags, triumphal arches and people dressed in their finest. Gifts were handed out – tea for women, tobacco for men and commemorative mugs for the children.
