One building, many faces

24 High Street, Chippenham

We think of buildings as being permanent and unchanging, but the transformation of 24 High Street encourages us to think again.

Local cloth trader Thomas Figgins added a magnificent Palladian-style façade to his home on Chippenham’s High Street in the 18th century. The façade itself was second-hand having been removed from another building nearby that was never completed.

The building was demolished in the 20th century but the façade, rescued for a second time, now stands in Bath at Sion Hill Place, fronting on to Summerhill Park.
