Friendly societies played a vital role in the lives of the working people of Somerset from latter half of the 18th through to the early 20th century.

By paying a voluntary contribution the members were included in festivities, received medicine and money when they fell sick or grew old and were provided decent burial when they died.

Each village had their own friendly society which would meet for a feast day once a year which usually included a parade, church service and an evening of feasting and music for the whole village.
