Leisure Time

The GWR in Swindon

The GWR Mechanics Institute provided a library and a reading room. Employees could come here to relax after a hard day's work. The GWR Medical Fund Society provided two swimming pools, as well as a Turkish bath. Swindon Works had many sports teams. Here is the Drawing Office Cricket Team in1906. The GWR mixed orchestra, pictured here in the 1930s, was one of a number of non-sporting railway groups in Swindon. Each year the GWR put on a Children’s Fete. It ran from 1866 to 1939. Every child got a free slice of cake!

The GWR in Swindon provided a multitude of sports and activities for their employees and families. Having a healthy and happy workforce was important for the GWR.

It was good for productivity and morale.   Whether you liked football or singing, there was something for everyone.
